Steve Whybrow was born in Wagga Wagga and grew up in country NSW before moving to Canberra to study Science/Law. He was admitted to legal practice in 1990 and worked as a Crown prosecutor with both the Commonwealth and ACT DPPs before being called to the Bar in 2002. Steve was appointed Senior Counsel in 2022.
Steve has a wide practice that includes criminal law (at both trial and appellate level), inquiries and inquests, common law and work health and safety litigation. He was counsel assisting in the Clarke Inquiry into the case of Muhamad Haneef, the Implosion of Royal Canberra Hospital and appeared for effected parties/family in the ACT Bushfire Inquiry, the Dreamworld Tragedy and the Montara oil and gas spill Inquiry.

As a Specialist Legal Reservist in the RAAF, Steve regularly appears before General Courts Martial both as prosecutor and defending officer, Commissions of Inquiry, and represented several personnel appearing before the War Crimes in Afghanistan Inquiry. Steve has deployed to the Middle East to undertake sensitive inquiries for the ADF and IGADF.
Most recently Steve appeared as lead counsel for the accused in the extraordinary prosecution of Bruce Lehrmann for an alleged sexual assault at Australian Parliament House.
Steve was President of the ACT Bar Association from 2018-2020 and has always been active in the legal community particularly in promoting women coming to the Bar and mentoring and tutoring new barristers, having acted as pupil master to nine readers before taking silk.
Steve is the proud father of four boys who share his passion for travel, English football and skiing.
