Mark Trowell KC

Mark is a leading Australian criminal lawyer and he was appointed King’s Counsel in 2000.  He has been a defence lawyer for most of his career, representing clients in Western Australia, interstate and overseas. He is a founding member of Albert Wolff Chambers.

Mark has acted for many well known personalities, including international art critic Robert Hughes, legendary Sydney nightclub identity Abe Saffron and iron-ore magnate Gina Rinehart.  However, Mark is always ready to take on the case of every person brought before the courts.

He has appeared as counsel at two Royal Commissions, several inquiries before the Corruption and Crime Commission, and has also prosecuted criminal cases for the DPP.

In December 2006, Mark was appointed by the Australian Government to undertake a review of the legislation governing the Australian Crime Commission (now the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission).

He is co-chair of the criminal law standing committee of LAWASIA. In recent years, Mark has been an international observer reporting on human rights issues on behalf of several Australian and international law organisations.

Mark was a member of the legal team advising on the appeal against conviction of Myanmar nationals Zaw Lin and Wai Phyu sentenced to death for the murder of English backpackers at Koh Tao, Thailand (2016).

He is the author of four best-selling books about the political journey of current Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. His latest book is Anwar Triumphs: The Ascent of Malaysia's Tenth Prime Minister Against All Odds, published in 2023 by Marshall Cavendish.
